Clinical Care Adjustments Made at Aspire Cahaba River

Aspire Physical Recovery Center at Cahaba River is adapting to the ever-changing landscape of healthcare and specifically skilled nursing facilities. Some of these changes are calling for adjustments to be made to clinical care. Presently, most skilled nursing facilities rely heavily on the medical care of their medical directors and primary care physicians to handle their patient’s medical needs.

At Aspire, we also reply on our physicians, but we wanted to do more to enhance our patients overall experience leading to greater outcomes during rehab.

To achieve this, we added Physiatrist, Dr. Laura Kezar to our team. Dr. Kezar is a professor and associate dean for students at UAB School of Medicine. She has been working with the rehab department at Aspire for the last 6 months. “Dr. Kezar is an asset to our team. Her focus is rehab and getting our patients feeling like themselves again, restoring their function, and getting them home quickly with a safe discharge plan.

The regular and routine communication between Dr. Kezar and our medical director, Dr. Sterling Shirah, allows for the greatest clinical care of our patients and we’ve been seeing great results,” says Freddy Skelton, Regional Administrator, NHS Management.”

What exactly is a Physiatrist?

They are physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They specialize in restoring optimal function to people with injuries to the muscles, bones, tissues, or nervous system, such as stroke victims. They assess patients for functional deficits and work with the rehab team to minimize disability and maximize independence.

The rehab team sets goals appropriate to the patient and family’s needs and works to eliminate any barriers impacting their transition home.

Rehabilitation in skilled nursing environments, like Aspire, are rapidly emerging as the predominant level of post-acute rehabilitation care in the United States.

Dr. Kezar will follow our patients closely through their rehabilitation process.  Because of this close relationship with the patient, she may recognize a change in the patient’s condition sooner and suggest changes allowing the patient to continue rehab uninterrupted by a possible hospital readmission.

Dr. Kezar specializes in musculoskeletal medicine, chronic pain syndromes including pain after spinal cord injury, complex regional pain syndrome, and neuropathic pain disorders. She rounds at Aspire Physical Recovery Center at Cahaba twice a week.
